Updates Corona Virus

With this page, we would like to inform you about Ibn Battuta’s policy regarding the Corona Virus. We would like to explain which measures have been taken and what the consequences will be for you as a member. The information will be updated regularly if needed. Please read the information carefully.

Foreign Excursion Morocco

On the evening of March 12, we have sent out an email to all members, which stated that the Foreign Excursion to Morocco would not be canceled. However, on the morning of March 13, the Foreign Excursion Committee has had an emergency meeting and we have changed our preliminary decision. The Foreign Excursion to Morocco will not take place.

There are several reasons for this decision. Firstly, the GGD, the RIVM, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Dutch Embassy in Rabat have been consulted. On Thursday we still got the advice of the GGD to continue our trip, and that people with symptoms of a common cold or cough were able to join as well. When they were contacted again on the 13th of March, they had changed their decision and told us that everyone with symptoms (of any kind) were to stay at home. Since we have no way of deciding whom of the participants have a cough or a cold, we could not decide who would have to stay at home. The fairest and safe decision is therefore to not continue the travels to Morocco with anyone from the group, to avoid making a selection that is not based on expertise.

In addition, the Ministry and the Dutch Embassy have stated that Morocco will most probably take ad hoc decisions. Due to these uncertainties stated by the GGD, the Ministry, and the Embassy, we feel the risks are too high to go to Morocco with 54 participants.

During the last week, we read in the news that travelers from the Netherlands weren't allowed to travel to Morocco anymore. For us, this confirms that we made the right decision.

Other activities

As for other Ibn Battuta activities, we will cancel all activities until the 1st of June, in line with the measures taken by the University and the Government. In addition, the Coffee Room and Board Room will be closed until further notice as well. Canceling all activities seems like an easy and safe decision to avoid any unnecessary risks.

As soon as the university has an update, or changes its policy regarding the cancelation of activities, we will review our policy as well and let you know as soon as possible. Therefore, check out the information on this page regularly.

Committees & Committee Meetings

In line with the new measurements of the Government, all committee meetings shall be done digitally via e.g. Skype or Zoom, or by phone. For committees that do not have activities coming up until the 1st of June we would advise to postpone the meetings until further notice.
